Chapter Eleven

The streetlamp was the only light on this dark night, and it shined through my motorcycle figurine that Diesel had given me for my Sweet Sixteenth birthday. When Kenny left my house, he had taken it from my rearview mirror and handed it to my brother who was trying to convince him to stay home.

But Kenny left.

Kenny epically altered my world several times that day.

Viola, Tucker, and I stared at the glass motorcycle as if needing our hero to hear our silent plea. Diesel saved our worlds once by not taking Viola from us. I think we were praying he could save us once again.

As I heard a real-life motorcycle race down my road, I knew Diesel’s gang was back in town and searching for his sister who wasn’t answering her broken cell phone. And, I knew it wouldn’t be long before her brother was notified.

Tucker didn’t notice, nor did V and I tell him of the shadow in the hallway, gun drawn. We knew we were acting far from our norm. But I didn’t want to speak to the biker brother in the gang. We wanted V’s brother. I think that was understood. The shadow tapped onto his cell.

Diesel’s crew cab truck roared up my driveway.

None of us moved, including the shadow guarding us.

Diesel stormed up the stairs.

We still didn’t move.

After I heard a pat on the back, releasing our silent guard, Diesel cautiously walked into my dark room. When we didn’t acknowledge him, he flicked on the light and inquired, “What the fuck is going on?”

As if a zombie, Viola stared at her brother. “We don’t know where he went.”

“Does it matter?”

She nodded as her eyes closed. “It does. I’ll explain later. But it does.”

“Shit,” he grumbled before texting someone.

Diesel drove his truck with three silent, lost kids staring out the windows, looking for our missing friend. It wasn’t ‘til I heard him on the phone, sounding highly agitated while giving out instructions to leave, and that he was calling 911, that I finally started coming out of my daze.

His engine picked up speed.

My body tensed.

And the fire shining through the night and against his windshield burned a hole through my soul.

The huge oak tree was now irreversibly a part of the car wrapped around its core; my car.

Diesel’s truck doors opened…

My vision swam with flames as I set my feet on the ground that now trembled like my heart. The earth felt unsteady, as did every step while my mind raced to catch up to what I was seeing. Burnt leaves fluttered to the ground after the searing heat damaged them beyond repair. Reaching out to the ravished vehicle, one of those leaves fell into my palm. Numb, so incredibly numb, my other finger tried to caress it, but… it disintegrated against my skin.

It was like a symbol of what my touch could do…

Burn you alive.

Slowly, my sight rose back to the flames…

The awareness that Kenny was now a ball of fire crashed into my reality with a violence that not even the devil himself would dare challenge.
